Black mask, worried brow, clown underneath

A boxer's face says two things at once: the furrowed brow and the black mask say serious, and everything else about the dog disagrees. That contradiction is the personality, and it lives in details — how far the mask reaches, the white flash up the nose, the set of the jowls. From your photo, all of it stays exactly as it is.

How this coat prints

Fawn runs from pale tan to deep mahogany, and brindle lays dark stripes over it; both are warm, which is why the shirts shown lean cool. Berry sets off a fawn coat without fighting it, and chambray gives the black mask and the stripes a light ground to stand against. Protect the mask, though. On any dark shirt the darkest tones are left as bare fabric, starkest of all on black, and a mask is the darkest thing on a boxer, so it can fade into the garment and leave the face without its frame. White and heavily marked flashy boxers flip that logic — lots of white wants a dark shirt.

The photo to use

A boxer's forehead only wrinkles when the dog is paying attention, so make a noise just before you shoot — a squeak, a whistle, the treat bag — and catch the tilted head and furrowed brow that follow. Take one with the mouth closed as well as the open grin: a closed mouth shows the underbite and the hang of the jowls, which are half of a boxer's face. Brindle stripes are fine dark lines on a warm base, and a soft photo merges them into muddy brown, so get close enough that you could count stripes on the screen.

Questions

My boxer is white. Will the artwork add fawn or a mask?

No. Coat colour and markings are among the things it's told never to change, so a white boxer stays white, patches and all. Pick a dark shirt — berry, navy or black give a white coat the most contrast.

Will the brindle stripes show?

They do on the photo presets, provided the photo is sharp enough to separate them. A reverse brindle, where the dark stripes dominate, reads best on a light shirt like chambray.

Can I get both of my boxers on one shirt?

Each design is built around one dog, so neither face has to be compromised to fit the other. Give each boxer its own photo and its own shirt — each is $34.99 with free US shipping.
