What photo works best
The scene is drawn around your photo, so the photo is the one thing that decides how good the shirt gets. The good news: a phone photo taken this afternoon is usually better than the best photo already in your camera roll.
Shoot at your dog's eye level
Kneel down rather than shooting from human height. A level, front-on photo gives the generator a face it can work with; a top-down angle flattens the skull and hides the eyes.
Natural daylight beats everything
Daylight near a window is plenty. Avoid photos that are already dark - detail that was never captured cannot be recovered, no matter how good the scene painted around it is.
The whole head, sharp, filling the frame
A clean head-and-shoulders shot with the full outline of the head in frame works best, with a little headroom above the ears for scenes that add a hat or a crown.
Nothing covering the eyes
Take off real sunglasses, costumes or anything over the face before you shoot. The eyes and muzzle carry most of the recognition, and covering them takes away exactly what has to stay theirs. A collar is fine to leave on.

Your dog's face, not a generic dog

Breed, coat colour, markings, ear set, muzzle shape - the details the people who know your dog recognise in half a second - are the parts the generator is instructed to preserve first, even when the art style pushes the other way.
That is the difference between this and a clip-art dog in a leather vest: a white blaze stays a white blaze, one floppy ear stays floppy, and the grey around an old dog's muzzle stays exactly where it belongs.
